The heart of any truck is its engine. It consists of many parts. Each has its own resource, the value of which depends on many different factors. For example: maintenance intervals, operating conditions, fuel quality, and more. Until now, in modern conditions, the resource of equipment for many reasons is developed much faster, and engine repair remains a demanded operation.

AWHelp24 cargo service specialists have been restoring truck engines for over 15 years. That is why the owner of a Volvo FH truck, whose engine was stopped in Schweinfurt, turned to AWHelp24 for repairs. The service operator organized the evacuation of the truck to the AWHelp24 branded car service in the city of Niederlauer.

How do AWHelp24 specialists repair an engine?
Repair of a truck engine can be:
-prophylactic,
- current
- capital.
In the first and second cases, the inevitable minor breakdowns are eliminated, which eventually arise even with the most careful driving. Overhaul is a complete dismantling of the engine with replacement of worn out components.

Diagnostics of the Volvo engine showed that one of the pistons must be replaced. Cylinders, pistons, rings suffer more than others from colossal loads and extremely high temperatures during engine operation.
The pistons, which are the main energy converter of the internal combustion engine, constantly contact the inner walls of the cylinder and experience the negative effects of friction. Its strength increases with insufficient lubrication, too small gaps in the cylinder-piston pair, deformation of the elements.
If the piston group malfunctions have arisen for the first time, they are limited, as a rule, to the installation of a new set of rings. The pistons themselves can serve two such replacements, but in the future they will also require updating, along with the restoration of the correct geometry of the cylinders.

The mechanics of AWHelp24 service highlight some technological nuances associated with wear and replacement of pistons:
1) Wear of rings.
As a result of friction against the inner surface of the cylinder, the rings wear out along the outer diameter, due to friction against the ends of the piston grooves - along the height.
The first piston ring and the first piston groove wear out most quickly, since this joint operates under the most severe temperature, abrasive and load conditions, often with insufficient lubrication. Rings usually wear out faster than grooves, losing their elasticity and breaking down due to relaxation of internal stresses.
A new piston ring installed in a worn cylinder deforms much faster than the old one. This is due to the fact that it does not adjoin the end of the groove and the surface of the cylinder with the entire surface (due to the mismatch of shapes), as a result of which the specific pressure of the ring increases sharply and is distributed unevenly. To avoid this, the worn grooves are restored on a lathe, using higher (repair) rings.
2) Wear of lugs
Both ends of the piston pin work inside the so-called bosses, and the middle part in the upper connecting rod head. To check the wear of these elements, their diameter is measured, in order to determine the size of the actual gap between them and the finger, the diameter of the latter is calculated at the mating points with the holes.
Due to uneven wear, the holes in the piston bosses become oval over time. If the size of the holes does not exceed the established norm, their shape is corrected by a reamer - to the size of the repair pin of a larger diameter. In this case, the diameter of the bushing of the upper connecting rod head is also increased.
3) Skirt wear
When the skirt is worn, numerous scuffs appear on it, the gap between its lower part and the cylinder walls increases - this leads to an increase in the noise of the engine running and to an increase in oil waste.
The wear limit is defined as the formation of a clearance of about 0.5% of the cylinder bore. For example, with a cylinder diameter of 50, 70, 80 mm, the limiting clearance will be 0.25, respectively; 0.35; 0.4 mm.

After the approval of the repair plan with the Volvo owner, the service managers provided all the necessary parts for replacement to the mechanics and after 2 days the truck was able to start transporting.
