Confiscation of driver's licenses for manipulating tachographs in Poland.

Members from the TLP union came up with the idea of taking away the driving licence of drivers who manipulate tachographs for three months. They turned to the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure, which promised to take the problem seriously, make inquiries to control organizations of controls and to give an answer after processing the received information. The Union of Transport Operators argues that it is concerned about the increasing frequency of fraud with tachographs during the pandemic. The reason is obvious: The demand for transport services has decreased while the supply on the market has not. The situation is forcing hauliers to cancel flights or violate transportation regulations in order to reduce costs. One option is to manipulate the results on the tachograph. The offenders use special computer programs to set speeds and travel times far below the actual ones. Thus, instead of the 10,000 required kilometers, a truck travels 20,000 per month. Each kilometer saves half the money spent on cargo transportation. The president of the Union of Carriers considers the current situation to be dangerous due to the possibility of the formation of a shadow sector within the economy, and therefore advocates for tougher punishments for unscrupulous drivers. Among other measures to combat fraud, the union intends to endow the Main Inspectorate of Motor Transport with the powers of a law enforcement agency. She will be able to conduct regular checks on weekends and holidays, and not occasionally, as at present. In addition, the LTP demands that the Polish authorities take action against lorries weighing less than 3.5 tonnes. There is no legal obligation to have tachographs on board such vehicles, so drivers violate the regime uncontrollably and continuously. The information department of the AWHelp24 international service urges international drivers to strictly follow all the rules of cargo transportation, not to violate the regulations for work and rest and to not manipulate the tachograph in any way. All these actions can lead to heavy fines and even actual arrests.
