How to choose a battery for a truck

Sometimes starting modern trucks can be tricky. The most common cause of this situation is battery failure. It is necessary to take a responsible approach to the purchase of an energy source so that the operation of a truck is free from such problems.

Batteries in most commercial vehicles are made up of several interconnected cells, each of which produces an electrical current. The main characteristics of the battery are:
1) Capacity. The ability of a power supply to deliver a certain amount of current per unit of time (measured in Ampere-hours, Ah).
2) Starting power. The maximum current that the battery can deliver to start a cold engine at negative temperatures.
3) Reserve capacity. A parameter that determines the time (in minutes) during which the battery will be able to provide maximum current (in most models - 25 A).

More batteries for trucks are divided into 2 types according to the version:
-Serviceable: this type of battery is called "traditional". The casing of these power supplies contains plugged holes for checking the density of the electrolyte and adding distilled water if necessary. It is worth considering that it is forbidden to add electrolyte itself.
- maintenance-free: batteries of this version are more modern. Batteries are hermetically sealed containers and, subject to the rules of operation, are able to work out the full warranty period without additional intervention. All that a truck owner needs to do is to periodically monitor the charge level and stable voltage at the terminals, to keep the container clean. If overcharged or undercharged, batteries quickly fail and cannot be recovered.

AWHelp24 experts advise you to use the following rules when choosing a battery for a truck.

Before buying a new battery, it is necessary to study the passport of the truck and clarify the following details:
-recommended battery parameters (capacity, type, polarity, size);
-model, manufacturer, volume and design of the engine;
- the required minimum equipment for the battery;
- temperature operating conditions.

It is also recommended to familiarize yourself with the characteristics indicated in the marking on the battery label and make sure that they match (+/- 10%) with the same parameters in the power source installed in the truck earlier. Pay attention to the size of the battery. If it is larger than the replaceable one, then the new element may not fit on a special platform, and if it is smaller, it will not be possible to fix it tightly. Check the electrolyte level and its density (it should be at least 1.25 g / cc). Make sure that all the main characteristics are correctly recorded in the passport of the purchased battery, so that in the event of a breakdown, it can be returned under the terms of the warranty. It is also necessary to familiarize yourself with the release date of the battery and the time it was in the warehouse. For serviced items, the warranty period is at least 2 years, for non-serviced items - 1.5 years.
Check battery polarity. It must correspond to the same specification of the battery being replaced (the location of the terminals must be the same). When buying a battery, it is recommended that you read the markings on it. This will help you more accurately understand whether this or that model is right for you or not.

The information printed on most batteries meets one of two standards:
In European countries, the marking consists of five numbers - nominal capacity ("Ah"), starting current (A), nominal voltage (V), date of manufacture (mm.yy), weight (kg). Also on the body there are polarity marks ("+" and "-") and electrolyte level ("min" and "max").

We remind you that you should pay attention to safety requirements when working with batteries:
- install the battery in strict accordance with the instructions;
- do not smoke near a working power source;
- at the time of installation, remove from yourself all objects and jewelry made of metal or other conductive materials;
- do not touch the truck body.
It is recommended to buy high-quality batteries for trucks only at a specialized service center that provides a manufacturer's warranty.

That is why we recommend purchasing and installing cargo batteries at AWHelp24 service centers.
