<div>It is allowed to move along the Austrian roads for the drivers having the driving license of international standard. This rule does not apply only to the citizens of the European Union. It is allowed to drive a car on the territory of Austria having the driving license of the foreign country within a year from the moment of crossing the border. If your driving license does not comply with the international standards you can translate it into German, but still it would be better to receive the driving license complying with the international standards at The State Traffic Safety Inspectorate, since this procedure does not require the repeated examination.</div>

<div>All foreign vehicles leaving the Austrian territory shall have the designation of state where they belong on the back side. </div>

<div>Besides the fuel in the petrol tank, it is allowed to import the 10l canister of fuel in the car trunk on a customs-free basis. It is allowed to enter the country on a private vehicle and use it on its territory for 6 months after which the car has to leave the country in unchanged condition.</div>

<div>Since January 01, 2012 in Austria, like in many other European states, the emergency corridor rule started operating subject to which the drivers of all vehicles in case of traffic jam shall merge to another line to give a way to the rescue and emergency services. The first line merges right as much as possible, and the left merges left, the car should move parallel to the traffic, along the corridor in the middle only the ambulance, police, fire brigade road and recovery trucks are allowed to move. The fine amounting to about 2180 EUR may be imposed for leaving the rescue corridor line.</div>

<div><strong>The first aid box, emergency sign and reflective jacket:</strong></div>
<div>These three things should be available in each car and should be easily-accessible (not in a car trunk), and shown in case required by the police. On Austrian roads outside the settlements the reflective jacket rule is operating. It is prohibited to leave your car and enter the traffic way in case of emergency or during the recovery without the reflective jacket. If you are noticed by the police on a traffic way outside the settlement without the reflective jacket you risk paying a double fine.</div>

<div><strong>Children transportation in Austria:</strong></div>
<div>Children aged under 14, and less than 150 sm, may travel only in the child safety seats.</div>

<div><strong>Permissible alcohol content in the blood:</strong></div>
<div>Maximum permissible alcohol content in the driver’s blood should not exceed 0.5 promille. For breaching these limits you might have to pay a fine, and under attenuating circumstances the driver's license may be revoked.</div>

<div><strong>Winter tires:</strong></div>
<div>For the period from November 01, to April 15, it is allowed to move along the Austrian roads only in the cars with the winter tires on the four wheels, or with the tire chains at least on two driving wheels. It is allowed to use the tire chains only in case the traffic way is covered with the snow completely or almost completely.</div>

<div><strong>Calling the police to the place of traffic accident in Austria:</strong></div>
<div>In Austria you have to immediately call the police and inform about the traffic accident only in case there are accident victims. If only the vehicle was damaged in the traffic accident, you should call the police only in case the guilty party has run away or if it is impossible to determine the guilty. For instance, if you came back from the store and found that your car has been damaged at the parking place during the time you were absent. In this car you should visually examine your car, it is possible that the guilty has left you a note with his details. According to the law, the guilty party, after waiting for certain period of time has the right to leave the place of accident, having insured that his information has become known to the driver of the damaged car, and inform the police about the accident. The police arrival to the place of accident to fix the details (if there are no victims) costs 36€.</div>

<div><strong>Paid passage through the autobahns and roadways of Austria:</strong></div>
<div>The passage through the autobahns and roadways for all vehicles in Austria is paid. To pay for the passage you have to buy a vignette.</div>
<div>Costs of vignettes (tariffs of 2014):</div>
<div>light vehicles with the weight under 3.5 t. 10d. – 8.50€, 2months. – 24.80€, 1hour - 82.70€</div>
<div>Motor bikes 10d. – 4.90€, 2months. – 12.40€, 1h - 32.90€</div>
<div>Vehicles with the weight of 3.5 t. pay for the passage through the Go-Box, which may be purchased on the board for 5€. Tariffs depend upon the amount of vehicle axes.</div>
<div>Vignette marked 14 (year designation) grants the right to move along the country territory for the period from December 01, 2013 to January 31, 2015.</div>
<div>The vignette should be glued from inside of the windscreen from the driver’s side. On the motor bikes the vignette should be glued where it could be well-seen, for instance, on the frame or on the front wheel fender. It is not allowed to stick the vignette to the removable parts of the motor bike. Loose vignette is considered invalid. When detached from the windscreen the vignette also becomes invalid. The fine for passage without the vignette or with the invalid vignette is120 EUR for the drivers of light vehicles and 65 euro for bikers.</div>
<div>You may purchase the vignette at the petrol stations, in tobacco stores and auto-clubs both in Austria and in the frontier zone. Usually, at all petrol stations or kiosks where the vignettes are sold there is a corresponding stick with the vignette.</div>

<div><strong>Parking in Austria:</strong></div>
<div>There are both paid and free-of-charge parking zones in Austria. In the so-called “blue zones” you may park free of charge for the period of time indicated on the parking sign at the entrance into the parking area. Use of the parking disc is obligatory and it may be bought at any tobacco kiosk. In some cities, for instance in Vienne, special parking tickets are used, which you have to fill in with the parking entrance time. They are also available at the tobacco kiosks or at the petrol stations. In many cities you may use mobile parking instead of the parking ticket, but before that you have to download special mobile application on your device and fix a special orange vignette in a prominent place, on the front panel inside the car or from inside on the windscreen.</div>
