Belgium tightens penalties for mobile phone use at the wheel

Belgium has introduced strict fines and penalties for using a mobile phone at the wheel:

  • Fines: Talking on or using a mobile phone while driving is punishable by a fine of €174.
  • Driving licence withdrawal: In certain regions of the country, including Halle-Vilvoorde and East Flanders, driving licences can be withdrawn for up to eight days.
  • Extended withdrawal of driving licence: In other areas, such as Limburg, the driving licence can even be withdrawn for up to two weeks.
  • All these measures are taken to reduce the number of accidents caused by distracted driving with a mobile device.
